Self-Care for New Mums: Simple Tips to Recharge and Thrive
Becoming a new mum is an incredible experience, but let's be honest, it can also be overwhelming! As a mum of two myself and a cognitive behavioural hypnotherapist, I know first hand how easy it is to put yourself last when your baby needs so much attention. But here’s the truth: looking after yourself isn’t selfish, it’s essential.
Self-care doesn’t have to be extravagant or time-consuming. It’s about small, manageable moments where you can reconnect with yourself, recharge, and be the best mum you can be. So, let’s talk about how you can start weaving self-care into your day as a new mum, even when time feels short!
1. Reframe Self-Care as Essential, Not Optional
Often, new mums feel guilty for wanting a bit of time to themselves.
Sound familiar? The first step is recognising that self-care isn’t indulgent, it’s a basic need. When you’re well-rested, calm, and balanced, you’re in a better position to care for your little one. So, start thinking of self-care as an essential part of your routine, just like feeding your baby or changing nappies.
2. Prioritise Sleep (or Rest) Whenever You Can
"Sleep when the baby sleeps" sounds great in theory, but in reality, it’s not always that easy! However, whenever you get the chance to rest, take it. If sleeping during the day isn’t possible, try to carve out little moments of calm, whether it’s listening to a short guided relaxation, closing your eyes for five minutes, or simply sitting with a cup of tea.
Hypnotherapy techniques, like deep breathing or visualisation, can be really effective in helping you relax quickly. Even a few minutes of guided relaxation can help reset your mind and body. Why not sign up and receive my FREE Confident Mum hypnotherapy audio here.
3. Ask for Help Without Guilt
One of the hardest things as a new mum is asking for help. But you don’t need to do it all! Whether it's asking your partner to take the baby for an hour so you can have a bath, or accepting help from family and friends, leaning on your support network is crucial. Remember, it takes a village to raise a child, and there’s no shame in sharing the load.
4. Incorporate Mindful Moments into Your Day
Mindfulness doesn’t have to mean sitting in silence for half an hour, it can be as simple as focusing on your breath for a few moments while feeding the baby or taking a mindful walk with the pram. Mindfulness can help ground you, reduce anxiety, and bring a sense of calm to your day. Little, everyday moments of awareness can make a huge difference to how you feel.
5.Get Outside - Even for 10 Minutes
Fresh air and a change of scenery can work wonders for your mood. If you’re feeling cooped up or overwhelmed, even a short walk around the block with your baby can help clear your mind. It’s an easy way to shift your perspective and get some much needed movement, which is great for both your physical and mental well-being.
6. Find Your Community
Motherhood can sometimes feel isolating, but you’re not alone. Whether it’s joining a local mums’ group, attending baby classes, or connecting with other mums online, finding a supportive community can be a lifeline. It’s comforting to know that others are going through the same challenges, and you can share tips, vent, and laugh together.
7. Remember That You’re Doing an Amazing Job
In the thick of it, it’s easy to focus on what you haven’t done; whether it's housework or fitting into your pre-pregnancy jeans.
But take a moment to celebrate what you have done: you’ve brought a new life into the world, and you’re nurturing your baby each and every day. That is incredible!
Be gentle with yourself. No one has it all figured out, and motherhood is full of ups and downs. Give yourself the same kindness and care you offer your little one.
Final Thoughts
Self-care as a new mum doesn’t have to be complicated or time-consuming. It’s about giving yourself permission to rest, recharge, and recognise that your well-being is just as important as your baby’s. You deserve to feel good and enjoy this special time, even when it’s challenging. Start with small steps, and remember: a happier, more balanced you means a happier, more balanced family.
